Hurlburt Field Airmen and their families had the opportunity to earn an extra $50 toward their savings account, during Military Saves Week , Feb. 23-27, at the Airman & Family Readiness Center.

“We are sponsoring a "Change to Save" contest,” said Thelma Few, Airman & Family Readiness Center community readiness consultant. “The purpose of the contest is to promote the importance of saving while rewarding the winner by contributing additional money to add to their savings account.”

Families had until Feb. 27 to collect change and take it to the A&FRC to be counted and rolled.

The Foreman family collected the most change, $377.05, earning them an extra $50 towards their savings, courtesy of the Eglin Federal Credit Union.

Staff Sgt. David Foreman, 720th Operational Support Squadron non-commissioned officer in charge of personnel recovery, learned about the contest from a flyer in his squadron.

“We had already been collecting change,” said Foreman. “I always use cash so I can give my kids money for their piggy banks.”

Military Saves Week is a financial readiness initiative endorsed by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and implemented by the Air Force to improve financial readiness of Airmen and enhance mission readiness.

“We are trying to instill good saving skills in our children at an early age,” Foreman said. “It also helps us prepare an emergency fund.”

Since 2003, Military Saves Week has been a part of the Department of Defense, seeking to motivate, support and encourage military families to save money, reduce debt and build wealth.
