The first Commando Con event was held at the Hurlburt Landing Zone Community Center here, Nov. 16.

Commando Con gave Airmen an avenue to celebrate comic books, video games and anime culture. This event is one of many hosted by the community center to boost morale and help Air Commandos stay resilient by building a sense of community with their wingmen.

"The idea originated at a Hurlburt Airman's Voice meeting, [when] Airmen from the [823rd Red Horse Squadron] asked about the possibility of hosting a comic and gaming convention at the Landing Zone," said Robert Scott, the 1st Special Operations Force Support Squadron Landing Zone Community Center director.

A team of Airmen along with Landing Zone personnel organized the event in two months.

During the event, Airmen competed in various video game and card tournaments for bragging rights and prizes.

"We were able to get sponsors to supply prizes and trophies for the winners of the tournaments and raffles," Scott said.

The convention concluded with a costume contest where the Joker stole the show and earned the title of best costume.

Airman 1st Class William Cornwell, an aircraft metals technician with the 1st Special Operations Maintenance Squadron, attended Commando Con with his friend and participated in the video game tournament.

"I had a great time, and I'd definitely do it again," Cornwell said. "It gave me an opportunity to meet other peers."

Scott said the event was well received and there is a possibility of another Commando Con in the future.

"I was pretty impressed with the turnout," he said. "We had a great time with all the Airmen and family members playing video games, card and board games."
