The Memorial Day weekend kicked off the 101 Critical Days of Summer with a theme of "Safe 'n Sound All Year Round" at Hurlburt Field, Fla., from May 24 to Sept. 3.

The "101 Critical Days of Summer" is a Department of Defense-wide annual initiative to raise awareness of the hazards during the summer season.

"The summer months are often a high point of our year as we take a well-deserved vacation and spend time with family and friends," said Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel. "The summer allows for an opportunity to relax and refresh; however, many of the activities we pursue during our vacation time put us at risk for accidents that have potentially serious consequences."

Safety concerns during this year's "101 Critical Days of Summer" include bear, fire, boating and firework safety.

Any of these activities can result in a potential mishap when safety precautions aren't properly taken or individuals aren't aware of the dangers that accompany them.

According to the 1st SOW Safety Office, 11 reported cases totaled $111,680 in medical and lost duty time expenses from May 27, 2012 to Aug. 24, 2012.

The 1st SOW Safety Office wants everyone on Hurlburt to know how to stay safe this summer. Safety tips highlighting summer safety will be posted weekly during the campaign.

"Each of you has a remarkable story," said Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, Air Force Chief of Staff. "As you participate in summer activities with your family and friends, don't let your story end with an unsafe choice. Enjoy the summer with the same dedication and enthusiasm you give to our mission and our core values. Make your story a great one, and stay 'Safe-n-Sound'."
