Hurlburt Field personnel from the 1st Special Operation Comptroller Squadron and the 4th Special Operations Squadron faced off against each other in the first game of the ultimate frisbee season on Hurlburt Field, Fla., May 21.

The season is the first of its kind to be held on Hurlburt Field for ultimate frisbee, a sport that is seeing rising popularity among Hurlburt Airmen.

The idea to start the season came originated from Senior Airman Steven D'Almeida, the coordinator for the event, who wanted to play the game more often.

"I really liked playing ultimate frisbee and I wanted to play more than the once a month chances I got when my unit played it for [physical training]," said D'Almeida, a tactical power productions journeyman for 1st Special Operations Communications Squadron.

For months, he dreamed of creating a league that would pit various units around Hurlburt Field against each other in his favorite sport.

Eventually D'Almeida found other Airman that shared his dream to play more frisbee and created a micro-season, with 8 squadrons and more than 60 players, expected to increase as word gets around.

"This micro-season is just to get a feel of how many people would participate later in the future," said D'Almeida.

Players from different units currently participate in games once a week at the fields by the Aderholt Fitness Center or the Child Development Center starting at 5 p.m.

Those teams that lacked the required seven players picked up frisbee-enthusiast watching the game or players from other teams, ensuring everyone gets a chance to play.
