-- Free tax filing help will be offered by the 1st Special Operations Wing to Department of Defense I.D. card holders at Hurlburt Field, Fla. Jan. 28 through April 30.

"$1 billion a year are unclaimed for returns because people miss deductions or simply do not file their taxes," said Wayne Smith, a tax specialist of the 1st Special Operations Wing Office of the Staff Judge Advocates. "I think, last year, about $3 billion went unclaimed and all that money goes straight back to the government."

The free program is part of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance by the Internal Revenue Service and military communities on bases worldwide.

Volunteers at the tax center will be standing by to cover deductions that might be readily missed, answer any questions and help with obstacles that may come up while filing taxes, Smith said.

The tax center will be in the HQ Air Force Special Operations Command East Annex on 304 Terry Ave., building 90137, located across the "T" intersection from Burger King.

The hours of operation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and will accept walk-ins the first week for 1040 EZ forms, but will be on appointment basis only thereafter. The operations hours and walk-in basis is tentative and subject to change.

For more information, contact the tax center at 884-7542 or 1 SOW/JA at 884-1799 for more information.
