John Bainter 1st Special Operations Wing Public Affairs Hurlburt Field, Fla. -- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the 1st Special Operations Medical Group got into the spirit of giving by hosting several events to raise money for a breast cancer charity. Chance drawings for prizes and ribbon sales at the Hurlburt Field Clinic brought in charitable donations and helped raise awareness for breast cancer. Members of the 1st SOMDG set up a station in their atrium with information about breast cancer self-examinations. Members of the squadron put their talents to use by making gift baskets and handcrafting shawls, quilts and other prizes. Participants donated money for tickets to win prizes in drawings. "I handmade a quilt for one of the awareness chance drawings; all of the proceeds from the drawing went to charity," said Tech Sgt. Kasandra Lee, a family health care clinician with 1st SOMDG. In total, more than $300 was raised to support breast cancer awareness and research. The proceeds were donated to charity via the Combined Federal Campaign. Breast cancer charities play a critical role for major advances in the fight against breast cancer. They change how the world communicates about and treats the disease and help to turn people from breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors. Although Breast Cancer Awareness Month is at a close it doesn't mean research, support and a search for the cure stops. There are many resources available for cancer awareness, and information on different forms of cancer treatment, as well as the proper way to perform a breast self-exam for men and women.
