Gator Lakes Golf Course closed Published June 2, 2012 1st Special Opreations Wing Public Affairs HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- Smoke and embers caused a small spot fire adjacent to the golf course, which required the evacuation of local golfers. The Hurlburt Field Fire Department and Jackson Guard's Fire Management section identified and engaged the small fire and used the golf course irrigation system to address the possibility of embers spreading fire to the golf course. The Gator Lakes Golf Course will remain closed until further notice due to the staging of fire-fighting equipment and ongoing helicopter operations. A change in wind direction caused the fires burning to the north of Hurlburt Field to strengthen. In response, the Hurlburt Field Fire Department and Jackson Guard's Fire Management section, in conjunction with the Florida State Forest Service, continue to take preventative measures and are engaging the fire throughout the duration. If necessary, more than a dozen local fire departments and state and federal agencies stand ready to assist. The fires are still contained and are not a threat to local residents; however, smoke will continue to be an issue until the area receives significant rainfall. For more information regarding the fire, contact Mike Spaits, Eglin Air Force Base environmental spokesman, at (850)-882-2836. Additional information will be posted on the official Hurlburt Field Facebook page and website as it becomes available.
