The Mar. 1 deadline for students to apply for a 2012 Hurlburt Spouse's Club scholarship is fast approaching.

The HSC has provided scholarships to Hurlburt Field's military families for more than 30 years to recognize the academic achievements of dependents wanting to pursue a higher education.

"We value education and want to support all military dependents so they have the opportunity to attend college," said Jane Richard, HSC scholarship chairperson. "Scholarships are one way we can help military families with educational expenses given the rising cost of tuition."

This year the HSC plans to award $8,000 in three different scholarships: senior, spouse and turnaround.

The senior scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors who have maintained a "B" or better grade point average. This year, a turnaround scholarship will be awarded to a senior who has made significant improvement during the course of their academic career. The HSC will also award a scholarship to a spouse wanting to pursue a professional degree for fall 2012.

Those eligible to apply for a scholarship must be dependents of Hurlburt Field military members to include: active-duty, retired, deceased or a remote military member currently on an unaccompanied tour. If retired, deceased or remote, the member's last duty station must have been Hurlburt Field.

Applications are available at the Airman & Family Readiness Center, base thrift shop, education office and library or on the HSC website. Eligible dependents are encouraged to apply. Applications will be reviewed and selected by a panel of judges from the local community. Scholarship recipients will be honored at an awards luncheon at the Soundside Club in April.

"I feel it is important to offer scholarships to Air Force dependents since the regular movement of military life can sometimes present challenges qualifying for other scholarships," Richard said.
