HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. --  "Tip of the Spear" is a monthly spotlight designed to recognize outstanding Airmen for the work they do every day at Hurlburt Field. Airman 1st Class Jess Nagelhout, 1st Special Operations Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels distribution journeyman, was selected for this month's spotlight.

Why did you join the Air Force?
To serve my country and to see something new.

How does your Air Force specialty contribute to the mission?
It's truly the lifeblood of the Air Force.

If you were Chief Master Sgt. Of the Air Force for one day, how would you change the Air Force?
I would devise a merit system based on an Airman's performance, discipline and education level. This will reward Airmen with less than three years in service a chance to move out of the unaccompanied government housing or dormitories before their normal eligibility date.

What's your favorite thing about Hurlburt Field?
Being a part of the Air Force Special Operations Command and going to the beach.

What do you like most about being an Airman?
I get to travel and see new places.

What's one thing you wish you were told before joining the Air Force?
Nothing. I did a lot of research and knew what I was getting myself into, for the most part.

What motivates you at work?
Knowing that my contributions aid in the success of missions down range.

Who are your heroes/ role models?
My father. He taught me to always strive to be the best.

Advice to others?
Hard work pays off.

Why was he selected?
"Airman Nagelhout was selected because of his outstanding work ethic and dedication to the job and the 1st SOLRS. He was recently selected for the cryogenics maintenance course, a distinction reserved for the best of the best senior airmen and staff sergeants in petroleum, oils and lubricants. He is actively engaged in the squadron's booster club where he was selected to be the secretary, ensuring valuable information is captured and distributed to more than 500 squadron personnel. Furthermore, his fitness abilities are ever prevalent, as both a member of the squadron's intramural softball team with a current record of 5-1 and as a physical training leader leading the fuels management flight in physical training sessions for two shifts. In addition to all of his extracurricular activities, he finds time to be the flight's equipment custodian and the lead trainer for Airmen assigned to the fuels distribution element serving the 1st Special Operations Wing with petroleum products ranging from ground/aviation fuel to cryogenics."
