Cynthia Turzak Published March 1, 2011 1st Special Operations Wing Public Affairs HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- "Tip of the Spear" is a weekly spotlight designed to recognize outstanding Airmen for the work they do every day at Hurlburt Field. Cynthia Turzak, 23rd Air Force Commander's Support Staff chief, was selected for this week's spotlight. Name: Cynthia Turzak Unit: 23rd Air Force Duty Title: 23rd Air Force Commander's Support Staff chief Hometown: Woodbridge, Va. Date Began Civil Service: Oct. 18, 1982 Hobbies: Spending time with my family and watching football. Why did you begin work for the Air Force? I started working for the U.S. Army right out of high school. When my husband moved to Shaw Air Force Base, I wanted to switch to the Air Force. I figured if we continued to move around, it would be easier to get a job at the base he was assigned to. How does your job contribute to the mission? My staff and I handle the personnel updates for more than 500 personnel assigned to the 23rd Air Force and it's subordinate units. We are the one-stop shop for our customers. If you were Secretary of the Air Force for one day, how would you change the Air Force? I would order extensive testing of programs and systems before implementing them Air Force-wide. Hopefully this would allow the test units to work out the bugs before everyone in the Air Force uses a program. Additionally, I would order a review of administrators' position descriptions to ensure their grades accurately reflected their duties. What's your favorite thing about Hurlburt Field? Being in Florida. What do you like most about being an Air Commando? My unit and the people I work with. What motivates you at work? I have always wanted to make a difference and provide my customers the best service. Who are your heroes/role models? My heroes are my dad, my husband and my daughter. My role model is Tracy Norrad. She really showed me the ropes of [the Air Force Special Operations Command] when I first moved to Hurlburt Field in 2000 and has always been a great supporter and friend to me. Advice to others? Give the Air Force 100 percent of your efforts while you are here and, above all, integrity first. Why was he selected? "Cynthia, along with the three other members of the Commander's Support Staff, provide outstanding personnel and administrative support to more than 600 personnel assigned to the 23rd Air Force. With 28 years of experience with the Air Force personnel system, Mrs. Turzak is a vital member of the team whose hard work behind the scenes is what keeps our operations flowing smoothly. She truly is a quiet professional." -Col. Daniel Settergren, 23rd AF director of staff
