Hundreds of military retirees and their spouses had their cholesterol checked, received tips on achieving healthier lifestyles and took part in special sidewalk sales during the 1st Special Operations Wing Commander's Retiree Appreciation Day at the Hurlburt Field Base Exchange and Commissary Sept. 17-19.

The Hurlburt Field Retiree Activities Office partnered with the Health and Wellness Center, the commissary and BX as well as representatives from outdoor recreation, TRICARE, the Air Force Enlisted Village and Gator Lakes Golf Course to show appreciation during the weekend of the Air Force's 63rd birthday.

"As retirees, you have served our Air Force and nation with pride and distinction," wrote Col. Michael Plehn, 1st Special Operations Wing commander, in the RAO's newsletter. "You are an important part of Hurlburt Field and our Air Force family. I hope you take advantage of part or all of these extra special days devoted specifically to you and your families in sincere appreciation of your contributions to our great nation."

During the weekend kickoff, TRICARE representatives answered retirees' questions about their benefits. Sandra DeMezzo, HAWC dietician, offered advice on prudent eating habits while fellow staff members administered complimentary cholesterol checks.

"I'm happy to serve our retired military," said Staff Sgt. Alissa Leviskia, 1st Special Operations Medical Operations Squadron medical technician, who drew retirees' blood samples for the checks. "They're still an active part of our community and need care as much as active duty Airmen, too."

The Hurlburt Field clinic received the blood samples, and many retirees got their test results before they finished shopping.

"I'm glad they did this," said retired Senior Master Sgt. Robert Young, who got his cholesterol tested along with his wife Jacqueline, after they finished shopping at the BX. "This is very helpful for the community, and I probably wouldn't have got this done had it not been here."

Retirees also took part in various specials at the BX's "Still Serving" sidewalk sale and commissary case lot discounts.

Retired Chief Master Sgt. Len Vigare, RAO representative, said he was happy with the event turnout and base support. He also highlighted the work the RAO offers, like assistance in legal and medical matters, to the nearly 30,000 military retirees in Northwest Florida.

"We try to help out, because a lot of active-duty people may forget this, but they will be retiring someday, too. And it's important to remember that and appreciate their service, too."
