"Tip of the Spear" is a weekly spotlight designed to recognize outstanding Airmen for the work they do every day at Hurlburt Field. Staff Sgt. Joshua Windsor, 1st Special Operations Security Forces Squadron pass and registration NCO-in-charge, was selected for this week's spotlight.

Name: Staff Sergeant Joshua Windsor

Unit: 1st Special Operations Security Forces Squadron

Duty Title: Pass and registration NCO-in-charge

Hometown: St. Augustine, Fla.

Date Entered the Air Force: Oct. 8, 2002

Hobbies: Playing with my three kids and riding my motorcycle.

Why did you join the Air Force?
To travel and start a career.

How does your Air Force specialty contribute to the mission?
We protect everyone. I strongly believe that if it wasn't for Security Forces, there would not be a mission.

If you were Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force for one day, how would you change the Air Force?
I would change our Airman Battle Uniforms. I know we are still going through a phase, however these uniforms are so heavy and hot in the summer. We have special uniforms that are  for downrange missions, but we need to have something that will keep us cool while working out doors at our home stations as well.

What's your favorite thing about Hurlburt Field?
I love being able to be a part of the special operations community and, of course, living in Florida.

What do you like most about being an Airman?
The job security and the satisfaction that I get after I see what I have accomplished in my time.

What's one thing you wish you were told before joining the Air Force?
That standing on the gate for more than 12 hours is not as easy as people think.

What motivates you at work?
Knowing that when my shift is over, I get to go home to my family and they are safe and have the opportunities that I may not of had.

Who are your heroes/role models?
My dad is my biggest hero, plus my supervisors and leadership that I have now and in the past.

Advice to others?
When you join the Air Force, it may seem grim at first. But stick it out, because it only gets better.

Why was he selected?
"Sergeant Windsor is a dedicated NCO who possesses management skills beyond his grade. He manages the nine-person Pass & Registration section, staffing both the wing headquarters and the main gate's visitor control section. His staff provides customer service covering three different shifts, seven days a week. He is responsible for conducting background checks on all base contractors, issuing and accounting for more than 10,000 restricted and controlled area badges and enabling installation access for Hurlburt Field visitors and guests."
