Commandos capture softball championship Published July 30, 2008 HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- The Commando Softball team travelled to Orlando recently to participate in the 2008 Amateur Softball Association Men's National Military Invitational with the intent to win. And win they did. "It was the first year ASA hosted a national military tournament, and we wanted to show off how talented this team was," said Coach Gary West. The Commandos went undefeated in the double elimination tournament. Their most impressive win came in the final game where they defeated the All Navy Softball Team 11-0 after five innings. "The Navy team thought they had the tournament wrapped up when they showed up, but most of the guys on our team had played with or against them in the past and were not intimidated," said Coach Jay Wright. "We didn't even have our full team there. But our guys were so relaxed, it didn't matter who we played." The team, which is made up of players from Hurlburt Field and Eglin Air Force Base, will travel to Orlando in August to compete in the United States Special Sports Association Military World Tournament. The Commandos players include Coach Chuck Shepherd, Coach Gary West, Coach Brad Arnold, Jay Wright, Rob Goddard, Matt Mercer, John Chance, Chris Bast, Andy Stapelfeldt, Brian Schule, Jeff Cross, Tom Melton, Travis Wollison, Larry Shelvy, James Haynes, Jim Bawcum, Jon Schreiber, William Mamourieh, Chris Simpson, Ryan Ostowski and Randy Howard.
