Hurlburt Field's newly renovated pool opened with a splash May 9.

For six months, the pool was closed due to structural damage and outdated facilities. The renovations and improvements cost just under $700,000.

The pool is more than 50 years old, according to lifeguard Alexandria Lewis.

"It was so weird to see everything so different," said Ms. Lewis, who has worked at the pool for three years.

More than 75 people jumped in on opening day while enjoying the warm weather and refreshing water. Attendance the next day was even higher.

The fun was interrupted, however, May 11 after a circulation pump blew.

"It was not a great way to start out the season by having a pump blow," said Jonathon Jones, 1st SOSVS.

It reopened two days later and users noticed the renovations.

"The locker rooms have better ventilation, so things dry faster," said Maj. Eric Holt, 1st Special Operations Medical Group. "The lockers are better, and it just looks really nice. It's a great alternative to running."

The most visible improvement is new blue rubber decking surrounding the pool.

"It requires less maintenance than the cement deck which surrounded the pool before," Mr. Jones said.

The rubberized surface also improves safety and the appearance.

Before the renovation, the tile surrounding the inside of the pool was breaking due to the shifting sand beneath it.

"Weeds were always popping through cracks in the cement making the pool area high maintenance," Mr. Jones said.

Improvements to the facility included a new circulation unit to the kiddie pool for cleanliness, and the floors in the bathrooms and locker rooms were completely replaced because of severe damage.

Since November, pool users have had to hold their breath during construction. Now, there's a calendar full of activities. Swim classes and water aerobics will begin in June.

The pool is open every day, year round except on Mondays. The summer-time hours of operation begin Memorial Day and end on Labor Day.

The pool is open to any Department of Defense cardholder and lap swims are free. For open swim the cost is $1.50 for cardholders and $3 for their guests.

Special packages are offered for regular swimmers: individual monthly passes are $20, and family packages are $30 a month. There will be a $10 discount on all packages beginning in June.

For the younger swimmers, there are a few rules to abide by.

"Floatation devises used must be U.S. Coast Guard approved or they will not be allowed at the pool," Mr. Jones said.
