Every year, the local chapter of the Air Force Sergeants Association recognizes the top performing Airmen at Hurlburt Field by selecting their NCO and First Term Airman of the Year.

For 2007, AFSA Chapter 567 selected Staff Sgt. Jose Sanchez, 1st Special Operations Logistics Readiness Squadron, and Senior Airman Justin Trumpower, 20th Special Operations Squadron.

"The competition was very tough this year," said Master Sgt. Tonya Polomsky, AFSA Chapter 567 president. "It was definitely not an easy task to pick the winners."

Sergeant Sanchez beat out 10 other competitors to snag the prestigious title while Airman Trumpower beat out six others. A board of four senior NCOs, including Sergeant Polomsky and retired Chief Master Sgt. Eddie Alicea, former 1st Special Operations Wing command chief, reviewed the packages, interviewed the candidates and made their selections.

"The AFSA awards are a little different from the usual base awards program in that each nominee has to meet the board in person at all levels of competition, even at the local chapter level," Sergeant Polomsky said.

Sergeant Sanchez and Airman Trumpower will travel to Jacksonville, Fla., May 29 - June 1 to compete against the other winners from AFSA's Division 5, which encompasses Florida, Puerto Rick and Panama.
