The annual award is given to the Air Force unit with the best maintenance record and reflects the 1st SOMXG's capability to support the special operations mission during peace and wartime. Col. Socrates Greene, 1st Special Operations Maintenance Group commander, said he was extremely proud of the men and women in his command and credited each of them with the win. "We did it, we are the best maintenance group in the United States Air Force," Colonel Greene said. "Your selfless service, daily sacrifices, innovation and commitment to excellence propelled us to this level of greatness." The group's superior maintenance ability provided the necessary support to facilitate 3,206 combat sorties over hostile territory. Along with 4,246 training sorties to produce qualified aircrew and a $338 million weapons system modification, the 1st SOMXG provided vital airpower to continue the Global War on Terrorism. Senior Airman Michael Berkley, 4th Special Operation Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief, said he feels this award really distinguishes the group's steady work ethic. "This award really isn't about any individual or squadron doing more than another, it recognizes the hard work put forth by everyone everyday," he said. The 1st SOMXG will now compete for the Department of Defense level Phoenix Award.
