Tax time tips: Gather all necessary documentation Published Jan. 24, 2008 By Tech. Sgt. Kristina Newton 1st SOW Public Affairs HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- The base tax center is now open in Bldg. 90210, Room 231, and is available to Hurlburt personnel through April 15. Individuals filing with the 1040EZ form are being seen on a walk-in basis, but only through Jan. 25. Starting Jan. 28, anyone wishing to use the services at the tax center must have an appointment. Before going to an appointment, it is important to know the type of information that will be needed. So, here are a few tips to help fulfill many of the common tax return requirements. The most common items everyone will need is a copy of the social security card for everyone on the return, W-2s from each employer and childcare expense information including the name, address and social security or tax identification number of the provider. People who wish to receive their return through direct deposit also need to bring bank account information. The process for 1040EZ filers is pretty simple. Only single income families without children who earned no interest from a savings account can file using this form. As expected, the more assets a person has the more complex filing becomes. Taxpayers need to provide supporting documentation if they received additional income from sources such as a rental property, sale of stocks, interest earned from a savings account, gambling winnings or real estate profits. Information on interest paid to mortgage lenders and property tax payments are also important. A special power of attorney is required if someone is filing for a spouse. And don't forget that if a member is deployed during the tax season they get an automatic extension of up to six months. Because of Internal Revenue Service restrictions, the tax center will not be able to file certain returns until Feb. 11. Details on these restrictions can be found at www.irs.gov.
