The holidays are here, and it's easy to get caught up with the festivities. Some people get so caught up they let their guards down and become victims of preventable accidents.

Following these safety tips will allow for a safer and happier holiday.

- Stay alert and be aware of surroundings
- Park in well lit areas, keep windows closed and lock the car
- Don't leave packages, wallets or handbags visible through car windows
- Don't carry large amounts of cash. If possible, pay with checks or credit cards
- Shred receipts with credit card numbers on them
- Do not give personal information such as credit card and account numbers to solicitors over the phone. Additionally, use caution when reciting personal information for cashiers when using checks
- While shopping, keep handbags close to the body, not dangling. Place wallets in the front pants pocket or an inside coat pocket
- While walking to the car, keep one hand free and the car keys readily available
- Instruct children to go see the store clerk or a security officer if they become separated from their parents while shopping
- If confronted, particularly by an armed individual, surrender the money, bag, etc.

For those who prefer to avoid the outside shopping scene altogether and make their purchases online, the following actions can help protect against fraud or identity theft.

- Only shop with known companies and make sure the Internet site complies with industry security standards
- Keep personal information private and passwords secure. Do not respond to requests for password or credit card information unless the transaction was initiated by the shopper

Finally, enjoy the holidays but don't drink and drive. If intoxicated and in need of a ride home, call a friend, supervisor or first sergeant. Airmen Against Drunk Driving is also an option. Call 884-8844 for a free ride home with no questions asked.
