Over the Labor Day weekend, the 1st Special Operations Security Forces Squadron conducted two sobriety check points on Hurlburt Field. The sobriety checkpoints were implemented after a spike in DUIs affecting Team Hurlburt members. The primary purpose of the checkpoints was to deter drunk drivers in order to increase public perception of the seriousness of the overall DUI problem. The results: 364 vehicle operators were contacted during the two checkpoints and none were found to be driving under the influence. One driver was identified as operating his vehicle while his driver's license was suspended. The driver was issued a traffic ticket and base driving revocation letter effective for 2 years. Tech. Sgt. Parrish Hollingsworth, 1 SOSFS Police Services NCOIC said, "The checkpoints provided a visible deterrent to vehicle operators and let the base populace know we take DUI enforcement seriously."

1st Lt. Anthony Blaine, 1st SOSFS said, "The checkpoints were publicized ahead of time in the base paper and in a base wide e-mail. All drivers that were contacted during the checks were courteous and provided all requested information, which greatly sped up the process." Hurlburt Field conducted these checkpoints in conjunction with the nationwide "Over The Limit, Under Arrest" DUI enforcement surge.

In the future more sobriety checkpoints will be conducted around the base to continue stressing the bases zero tolerance policy for DUIs. For more information contact 1st SOSFS Police Services at 884-6185.
