Observe proper gym etiquette Published July 6, 2007 By Airman 1st Class Sean Moroney 1st SOSVS HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- In Air Force fitness centers, gym etiquette is not only expected, but required. Gym etiquette is safety-oriented. We have to take care of ourselves and our Air Force family while working out. There are many steps you can take to protect yourself, your wingmen and the fitness center equipment. First, let's talk about sanitation. Sanitation is essential in the fitness center. The staff wipes down the machines, but it's vital you wipe the machines off when you're done with them. This prevents passing germs that cause colds, illness and skin infections. The next point deals with caring for the equipment. Don't drop the weights on the floor. If you cannot set the weights down in a controlled manner, then please refrain from lifting them. The fitness centers don't have the resources to replace broken weights due to misuse. Many things can go wrong if safety is not taken seriously. When lifting weights, use a spotter. Utilize the bar clamps to ensure the weights don't come off while using free weights. Know your limitations. I encountered a close call last year when a man using the leg press machine was breathlessly trying to yell for help. The machine had his thighs pressed against his chest, and he was unable to budge the weight to apply the lock. Luckily, another gentlemen and I were in the room and were able to help him. Afterwards we asked, "Why were you lifting such heavy weights?" He replied, "The weights were already there." It's very important you return the weights when you're finished. Nobody wants to take off four 45 pound weights just to put on the weights they need. And they may not have the ability to change out the weights. Be considerate to your Air Force family.
