A local fifth grader recently demonstrated that Hurlburt's tradition of excellence not only extends to its Airmen, but also to their families.

Alyna Seguro-Sanchez, daughter of Tech. Sgt. Rene Sanchez, 1st Special Operations Equipment Maintenance Squadron, and Araceli Segura, recently won the City of Fort Walton Beach Earth Day/Arbor Day Celebration poster contest.

For winning, she received a $50 and $75 U.S. savings bond, a shirt with her picture on it, four gift cards to the movies, a cup holder and a key chain.

Alyna, a student at Liza Jackson Preparatory School, was given the option by her art teacher, Mrs. Baker, to enter one of two art contests, and evidently, her choice to enter the Earth/Arbor Day competition was the right one.

In addition to winning first place in the city competition, her poster went onto state competition, where it received second prize.

"We're very proud of our daughter, she just loves art," said Sergeant Sanchez.

It may be Alyna's artwork that's drawing rave reviews, but it's not the only reason she chose to enter the competition.

She also feels that Earth/Arbor Day is important.

"It's a day to remember and celebrate what trees do to help us," Alyna said. "It also helps people remember how beautiful trees and forests are."

Earth/Arbor Day was April 20 and during the celebration, it was impossible to overlook Alyna's handiwork. Her entry was displayed community-wide on T-shirts and publicity posters for the event.
