AFSOC Outstanding Airmen of the Year

Senior Master Sgt. Jeffery Mayberry, 1st Special Operations Equipment Maintenance Squadron, was named the 1st Specil Operations Wing First Sergeant of the Year. He led two squadrons through the wing operational readiness exercises and inspections successfully. Staff Sgt. Jonathan McCoy, 24th Special Tactics Squadron, is a pararescuemen and was named the 2006 NCO of the Year for Pope Air Force Base, N.C., and has been decorated with two Bronze Stars, one with valor. He developed integrated strike aircraft, helicopter tactics, maximizing complimentary capabilities on 50 aircraft sorties. He also led a joint team in improvised SCUBA search techniques. Senior Airman David Orvosh, 21st Special Tactics Squadron, is a combat controller who was the sole Airman attached to a U.S./Iraqi special forces team as a combat advisor. He trained an Iraqi counter-terror unit by holding classes, rehearsals and led 24 strategic combat missions. Helen Pontarolo, Air Forces Special Operations Command, was named the AFSOC Civilian of the Year. She was key in the merger of manpower, personnel and services, making it a seamless transition. Bartholomew Gunderman Jr., 1st Special Operations Security Forces Squadron, trained more than 575 civilians at eight deployed locations and 200 base and coalition personnel including Korean, Japanese, Australian and Kuwaiti air force personnel.
