A librarian with the 1st Special Operations Services Squadron was selected as the Federal Library Technician of the Year for 2006.

Sabrina Honda, who has been a librarian technician on base for more than three years, will receive the award October 21 at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

"Sabrina's creativity and energy are the catalyst for unique programs that people talk about for years," said Vicky Stever, 1st SOSVS librarian. "Her personal networking, volunteerism and professionalism inspired donations that funded 115 programs to enrich learning and literacy for our military members and their families."

When asked why Ms. Honda was worthy of such a prestigious award and what her customers thought of her, Ms. Stever said the customers vote with their attendance, so the number of people who attend the events she coordinates tell the story.

According to the library, Hurlburt's summer reading programs are huge in relation to the library's size. About 200 children attend weekly musical performances, science shows, live-theater and craft activities. From the standard weekly story times to summer, fall and online reading clubs, total participation in the literacy and arts activities exceeded 3,000 people.

To be eligible to win this award, each recipient must be a federal employee and a practicing library technician in a federal library or information center in the United States or abroad.

Selection criteria includes a commitment to service and excellence in support of the mission of the library or information center. Nominees must have demonstrated exceptional technical competency during Fiscal Year 2006 in public services, technical services, information technology or other library/information service areas and flexibility through being open to change, adapting work methods to changing conditions and dealing effectively with ambiguity.
