Inspiration comes from unusual source for one Airman

Over the past few months, while doing my physical training every morning at the Aderholt Fitness Center, I noticed a person helping an elderly, white-haired gentleman exercise with weights and various equipment.

I thought to myself that they were probably retired chiefs or colonels coming to Hurlburt to get their daily exercise.

The white-haired gentleman would be lifting weights, just clanging away on the machines pumping iron, then he'd make his way to the next piece of equipment with his friend helping set up the machine and assisting him.

I thought to myself that it was truly inspiring to see these guys coming to the gym every day to stay fit.

I saw the person that helps him in the locker room one evening and I wanted to thank him for helping and inspiring the white haired gentleman to come to the gym.

This gentleman, Joseph Caruth, proceeded to ex-plain that the 87-year old gentleman he assists, comes to his gym to inspire and motivate the Airmen not only to be fit to fight, but to be fit for life.

The white haired gentleman is retired Brig. Gen. Harry "Heinie" Aderholt.

Both of these gentlemen should be commended for the example they set for Airmen young and old. Additionally, they have both had an incredible impact on the base and the community.

Wherever you are, whatever you do, you may never know who or where inspiration will come from.
