Hurlburt's Jammar Major scored 54 points as the Commandos twice sank the Naval Station Mayport Hurricanes this weekend.

Major's 29 points Saturday and 25 Sunday led all scorers as the home team tallied 87-75 and 83-78 wins to climb into first place in the Southeastern Military Athletic Conference standings.

Saturday's game was a back-and-forth affair.

On Sunday, it appeared that the Commandos would blow out the visitors in the second half - advancing a four-point lead up to 16 points in just four minutes.

Trailing 64-48 with eight minutes left in the game, Mayport whittled the deficit down to six with one minute on the clock.

In the stretch, Andre Harp-Thomas' driving layup and a 10-footer by DeAngelo Gilliam finally put the game away.

"We have to learn how to finish better," Commando coach Greg Harris said. "We built up a 15-point lead and stopped doing the things that gave us that lead."

The Hurricanes showed up shorthanded due to weekend duties at the base near Jacksonville, Fla.

"I only had five players," Mayport coach Vic Galman said. "They got tired."

As of Dec. 10, Commandos' season record stands at nine wins and three losses.
