Fitness center wraps up intramural cross-country Published Dec. 8, 2006 By Staff Sgt. Kelly Ogden 1st SOW Public Affairs HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- The 1st Special Operations Service Squadron fitness center will wrap up its third season of intramural cross country on Dec. 15. The first official race began Nov. 3, each of the five 2 - 5.5 mile races attracted 16 squadron teams and more than 100 participants. Aderholt and Commando fitness center staff members spent countless hours clearing, mowing and chalking trails in preparation for each race. Senior Airman Brett Logan, Aderholt staff member and intramural cross country program coordinator, was one of those key Team Fitness members who braved the weed and rodent infested trails. "Alongside Airman Anthony Clerkin, I ventured out onto the trails a few weeks before each race and cleared away stray branches and bushes with a machete," Airman Logan said. "The presence of deer ticks and black snakes on the trail motivated us to push a little faster." The team turned more than 20 miles of wilderness into four solid cross country trails. "It takes a bit of effort to push 400 pounds of chalk through the woods for four miles," Airman Logan said. Fitness center staff members and competitors alike were impressed with the program's overall success. "This season has been outstanding, good runners put it all on the line for their squadrons," said Frank McNally, 1st Special Operation Component Re-pair Squadron. "But more important is the SVS team, who were out there in the cold weather setting up, cleaning up, posting race results and listening to the few complainers, my hat is off to the men and women of SVS."
