Mobile driver's license unit available to Team Hurlburt Published Nov. 9, 2006 By Staff Sgt. Mareshah Haynes 16 SOW Public Affairs HURLBURT FIELD, Fla -- The Hurlburt Airman & Family Readiness Center, in conjunction with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, now offers driver's license services every other Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the A&FRC. The mobile unit and can provide most of the same services provided at the offices off base. Like most inventions, the idea for a mobile driver's license unit was spawned from a problem. After moving here from Turkey, Bill Lawson, 16th Mission Support Squadron A&FRC director, had to transfer his driver's license to Florida from Texas. The seemingly simple task turned into an all day affair. "It took almost an entire day at the downtown office," Mr. Lawson said. "I had to take leave, miss work and sit in line forever." When a retiree who worked at the office suggested a mobile unit at the base, it seemed only logical. "We did the appropriate coordination and made it happen," Mr. Lawson said. "Now, folks can come here to the A&FRC, save the time driving downtown, and avoid the long lines and wait in the office." Any person with a Department of Defense ID card can use the mobile unit on base. Military members can also obtain a commercial driver's license at the A&FRC. The prices for licenses and other items are the same as at the downtown offices and fees can be found on the Web site.
