Wingman Day is fast approaching, and we at Air Force Special Operations Command wholeheartedly embrace and look forward to making this day as meaningful as possible.

The main objective of Wingman Day is to strengthen the morale and welfare of the unit by devoting time to building relationships between co-workers, examining organizational strengths and vulnerabilities, and planning for the coming year.

The underlying concept of Wingman Day involves several core principles that are a part of our Air Force way of life. These principles include:
- Effective suicide prevention
- Responsible drinking behavior
- Effective financial management
- Safe practices at home, work and on vacation
- Effective sexual assault response and prevention
- Effective domestic violence intervention and prevention
- Effective identification of and intervention with troubled Airmen
- Responsible decision making and behavior in all phases of our lives
- Culture of responsible choices: Airmen making responsible choices to take care of themselves and their fellow Airmen

This day is more than an event. It's a culture of Airmen taking care of Airmen 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is the centerpiece on which this year-round culture is anchored; it reinforces the Wingman concept, reacquaints Airmen with its principles and revitalizes our dedication to being a great Wingman.

Because of our unique mission and calling, AFSOC celebrates Wingman Day twice a year.

Large and small groups should be used to share information and solicit ideas with the goal of enhancing our ability to take care of each other.

We ask all involved to focus on events that emphasize team building, communication and interaction - not training or the presentation of material.

Direct and honest dialogue between Airmen and their supervisors is a critical part of this day. We will seek ideas from our most junior Air-men, who are on the front lines day in and day out and often face the greatest stressors.

Finally, Wingman Day offers a pause in the day-to-day mission focus to solidify relationships, get to know peers in more meaningful ways, systemically examine the organizational climate, trouble-shoot unit problems and layout a roadmap for the coming year.

If possible, use this day as an opportunity for Airmen to join with each other and their families in activities all can enjoy that will embrace the esprit de corps that is the cornerstone of this command.

Wingman Day belongs to commanders, and they are encouraged to tailor activities to best meet the needs of their units.

We have created a state-of-the-art Web site that is now available. This Web site has a myriad of information and topics such as: chaplain information, motorcycle and automobile safety, substance abuse, small group discussion guidance, suicide information and payday loans.

We believe these topics will facilitate meaningful discussion in small groups. Kudos and thanks go out to the many agencies that labored to make this Web site one of the best in the Air Force.
