Hurlburt Kuk Sool Won students compete in world championships Published Oct. 20, 2006 By Staff Sgt. Gideon Juko 16th SOW Safety Office HURLBURT FIELD, Fla -- Nine Kuk Sool Won students from Hurlburt Field competed in the 2006 World Kuk Sool Won Champion-ship Tournament Oct. 7-8 in Houston, and came home with a total of 26 medals 13 gold, nine silver and four bronze. Among the gold medal winners were Staff Sgt. Gideon Juko, 16th Special Operations Wing Safety, who took first place in the adult black belt division's forms competition. Staff Sgt. Jesse Ost, 16th Equipment Maintenance Squadron, received two gold medals - one in weapons and the other in self defense. Several junior competitors from Hurlburt also won gold medals in their divisions: Aaron Juko, Alisha Juko, Aliyah Sylvester, Elijah Sylvester and LaShea Williams. The final two competitors from Hurlburt, Palak Engel and Sean Sylvester, also won medals in their divisions. Held annually to promote goodwill among Kuk Sool Won practioners, this year's competition featured participants from more than 239 dojangs martial arts schools from 11 countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Korea, Spain, the Netherlands, Japan, Thailand and Venezuela. The two-day event features junior- and adult-level competitions in empty hand forms, self defense, weapons forms, board breaking and sparring.
