The 15th Aircraft Maintenance Unit intramural football team narrowly edged by the 4th Special Operations Squadron Wednesday, to win 8 - 6.

Starting on offense, the red jersey AMU team got off to a rocky beginning, receiving a false start penalty on the third play of the game, but then seemed to pull it together as their quarterback, Wayne Smith, threw a 20-plus-yard pass to bring them within sight of a touchdown.
However, due to the tight defense of the SOS, they were unable to score.

The 4th had a worse opening drive as their quarterback, Ken Card, was sacked by Joseph Hayes in the end zone on their second down for an AMU safety.

AMU let some excellent scoring opportunities slip away in the next series and turned the ball back over to the 4th who quickly took charge and moved up the field to the three-yard-line before calling a time-out with about a minute and a half left in the first half.

Getting back on the ball, Card took the snap and ran a quarterback sneak to the right corner through a sea of red shirts, stretching out his arms to slip the ball across the goal line before being forced out of bounds. The extra point attempt was no good.

The 15th answered quickly and within two plays was sitting on the SOS 30-yard-line. Then on third and long, they ran it up to the 10 for a first down. On the snap, Smith tried going right but was stopped.

Next play, he faded back and shot a pass over the middle to team captain Walter Alamo who was able to dive into the end zone for a TD.

Going for one on the extra point, Smith tried to connect with Alamo again, but Alamo was unable to hold on to it in the end zone to score before the half ran out.

The second half was back and forth with neither team able to produce any points.

During the final drive of the game, SOS' Nick Siesser caught a great pass, 35-40 yards, from Card, jumping and catching the ball on his fingertips with three defenders covering him, but was unable to get it into the end zone for the win.

SOS coach Jeremy Porto praised his players.

"Baylen Johnson played great D for us making some key 'tackles' and pressuring the other teams QB into throwing some quick and dangerous passes," Porto said. "And Bryan Gant helped lead the offense as our snapper. He hustled hard and created some great pass protection for our QB."
