Base housing construction update: Paving way

HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. --  Whether you are just passing through or heading to work on base, U.S. Highway 98 drivers can see different tractors, cranes and trucks and hear the sound of construction workers shouting to one another here.

What is all the commotion? When will it end?

Corvias Military Living, contracted by Hurlburt Field, is paving the way and preparing the base for new housing.

Base officials and Corvias Military Living held a ground-breaking ceremony June 3 for the Osprey Landing neighborhood located on the south side of base. At that time, the land looked untouched and almost no construction could be seen. Now, there are tractors, trailers and workers on the site.

"In the next 30 days, our plan is to start paving the first section of Osprey Landing," said Bob McDonald, Corvias director of construction. "You will start seeing a road, not the whole thing, but a quarter of it."

Toward the end of September, people will start seeing vertical construction of the new homes, McDonald said.

"You'll see wood being delivered, concrete trucks and trusses flying in the air," he added.
As the neighborhood construction comes together, curious passerbys are urged to stay off the site as a safety precaution until the homes are finished.

"Once the homes are done, management will walk people through the homes and do an open house," said Brandon Masters, Corvias communication manager.

The other half of the construction is taking place west of the Pine Shadows neighborhood on the main part of base. The site work is ongoing, which includes grating of the building pads and the installation of underground utilities.

"The two sites we're working on now, we're able to access both of them from U.S. Highway 98 and not through the housing area," said Stan Morehead, Corvias program manager.

As the project continues, Corvias encourages residents to provide feedback regarding the construction to their office.

"As we move forward through the construction process, there's going to be some challenges as we close streets, demo and rebuild, so we just ask [the residents] to have patience," said Morehead. "If there is anything that [the residents] are concerned, unhappy or confused about, call us. We love feedback."
