Some people see the new year as a good time to make a resolution to lose weight, and with the help of the Weight Warriors Program that resolution was within reach.

"Weight Warriors is an eight-week program that combines healthy eating habits and exercise with encouragement that promotes a healthy lifestyle and weight loss," said Karen Cataldo, Riptide gym manager.

Prior to the start of Weight Warriors, participants were given a pre-assessment fitness test to help track their weight loss during the program. The assessment consisted of a three-minute step test, push-up and sit-up test, body mass index measurement and several other evaluations of physical fitness.

Weight Warriors also offered new opportunities for participants to spice up their fitness programs.

Each participant had the opportunity to attend health and fitness classes to learn healthy eating habits and exercises to improve their physical fitness.

"I tried everything they offered," said Brenda Every, 505th Combat Training Squadron modeling and simulation analyst. "Things that I would have never tried if I wasn't in the program."

Kettlebell, Zumba, spin class and strength training were some of the activities offered during the program.

Winners were determined on two different factors; points earned and percentage of body fat lost.

Points were earned by attending a variety of workout sessions, weekly meetings and special events.

Cheri Dewever, a two-time winner, said this year was a better year for her.

"Percentage wise, I did better," said Dewever. "I did a lot more cardio."

Dewever said she highly recommends the Weight Warriors program and encourages more people to participate.

"The added competition is a benefit because it makes me work harder," she said.
