Lt. Gen. Thomas Travis, Air Force Surgeon General, visited several Air Force Special Operations Command units here Nov. 19.

Travis said the visit enabled him to gather information and return to Congress with a firsthand account of AFSOC's mission and growth, including resources for Preservation of the Force and Family, which is a Special Operations Command initiative.

"I got to see the operational mission, but more importantly, I got to see the medics who are so important at supporting those operations," said Travis. "My job is to make sure they are trained and equipped to go do those things."

Travis visited the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron and saw their physical training and therapy facilities. He spoke with several special operators, as well as a physical therapist, who provides recovery and preventive treatment.

"You can't understand it unless you see it and talk to the people," Travis said.

Col. Timothy Robinette, AFSOC surgeon, accompanied Travis during the tour.

Robinette said the visit was successful.

"Travis was able to see how AFSOC is embedding medical assets in our line organizations to support the mission," Robinette said. "He encountered a variety of our medical resources, equipment, and most importantly, the Airman who support the mission."
