Lunch Date with a Parent Plate

HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. --  Parents can meet their children for lunch at the child development centers here and receive a free plate of food.

The base CDCs provide breakfast, lunch and a snack to more than 400 children during the work week, according to Sharon Brewer, 1st Special Operations Wing Airman and Family Services Flight chief.

"We realize the important role parents play in the education and development of their children," said Brewer. "Our programs have an open door policy and families are highly encouraged to visit and read to the children, have lunch, participate in Parent Advisory Board, or assist with any ongoing projects."

Senior Airman Skye Escalera, 1st Special Operations Medical Group patient travel coordinator, said she has lunch with her daughter almost every day.

"It allows me time to get to know the teachers and see how the children interact with one another," she said.

Lunch is served family-style to promote a social learning experience for the children. All menus are approved by a dietitian or major command specialist, according to Brewer.

"The food is really good," Escalera said. "It's always entertaining to watch the kids do a pre-lunch dance before they eat every day."
