Summer is here and boating season is well underway for Air Commandos, which means it’s time to review safe boating practices.

Last year Hurlburt Field had four recorded boating mishaps, half of which resulted in lost work days. Reviewing safety tips is important to help prevent similar mishaps this summer.

“Make sure your gear is in good working order, all your emergency equipment on the boat is functioning and observe the wake zones,” said Joe Freese, 1st Special Operations Wing ground safety coordinator.

All Airmen must follow state and federal boating regulations. Personnel who are unsure if their boat meets standards, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is available to do a free safety inspection.

Many boating mishaps occur when alcohol is involved and Mr. Freese warns that boating under the influence carries many of the same penalties as driving under the influence and will result in the suspension of both boating and driving licenses.

“Don’t drink and boat,” said Freese. “If you are going to drink make sure there is a designated driver that isn’t.”

Boating under the influence isn’t the only thing to avoid this summer, violating wake zones and speeding can also get you in trouble with the law, as well as increase the possibility for injury.

Leaving a float plan with an acquaintance, detailing travel times and destinations, is an important step to keeping safe on the open ocean.

When traveling out on the ocean it is advisable to bring a radio and GPS to contact rescue services in the event of an incident. Check the local weather forecast for updates and stay alert for incoming storms to avoid unexpected weather.

“It all comes down to risk management,” said Freese. “If it doesn’t look right or feel right don’t do it.”
