The Hurlburt Field thrift shop, the base's hidden treasure Published Dec. 15, 2011 By Raquel Sanchez 1st Special Operations Wing Public Affairs HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- The Hurlburt Field thrift shop is the bases hidden treasure, offering a variety of unique items for everyone. It has provided Airmen and their families with an affordable alternative to shopping for more than 20 years. "It's really a treasure hunt in here," said Julie Miller, volunteer and president of the Hurlburt Spouses Club. The thrift shop receives items regularly so you never know what you may find. Shoppers can purchase gently used items like PT gear, jewelry, furniture and seasonal decor for a fraction of a retailer's cost. "I try to come at least twice a month," said Zofia Vanselow, retiree spouse and shopper. "I always find nice things at a good price." More recently, they have noticed a trend of men visiting the shop to browse through the "dude hangout" which features items like electronics and sporting goods. Donations are gladly accepted at the thrift shop as well as items to be sold on consignment. Shoppers can sell their items on consignment and receive a percentage of the proceeds when their item sells. The thrift shop is operated by the HSC a group of spouses (enlisted and officer) that participate in many volunteer programs to support the military and local community. Beryl Kopacz, became a volunteer more than 30 years ago when her husband was serving and has been doing it ever since. She jokingly says that she continues to volunteer to "stay off the golf course" even though she has never liked golf. "We're operating on level on what can we give back, how can we help the base and how we can reach out to others," Miller said. Last year the thrift shop raised more than $15,000 in profits all of which went to benefit the base and local community and Air Force wide charities. In addition, proceeds from the thrift shop contribute to scholarships for Airmen and their families. The thrift shop is located in Building 90320 off of Simpson Avenue and is open to any Department of Defense cardholder. The thrift shop hours of operation: M-W: 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. 1st and 3rd Sat: 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
