The 1st Special Operations Wing Chapel hosted the first Single Parent Wellness Retreat at the Hilton Garden Inn in Okaloosa Island, Sept. 14-17.

The event was targeted for single military parents and their children.
“This demographic has been under-served, since most programs focus on couples resilience.” said Master Sgt. Diogenes Cruz, non-commissioned officer in charge of program support with the 1st Special Operations Wing Chapel.

The educational components of the retreat incorporated the Four Lenses personality assessments and focused on the importance emotional intelligence has on parenting.

“Both of these topics serve to aid parents in identifying their children's personality types, as well as their emotional strengths and weaknesses,” said Staff Sgt. Emily Jackson, a chaplain assistant with the 1st SOW Chapel.

The three day event kicked off with a social dinner, as well as an introduction to the personality assessments. The following days concluded the personality assessments and taught the significance of emotional intelligence.

“Parents will learn how to understand and connect with their children based on their personalities, and use their newfound knowledge to strengthen their relationships,” Jackson said. “This retreat is a groundbreaking opportunity for single parents to obtain some tools and tactics that will help them to understand and communicate with their children to the best of their ability.”
