HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- Before Airmen can support missions around the world, they first need the proficiency and skills to safely use their weapons in high-pressure situations.
Combat Arms Training and Maintenance instructors assigned to the 1st Special Operations Wing prepare Airmen for that responsibility through hands-on weapons training designed to maintain a deployable, ready force.
“As a CATM instructor, I want everyone who comes through our classes to be comfortable with their weapon and confident in their abilities,” said one CATM instructor assigned to the 1 SOW.
To enhance proficiency, CATM instructors begin by teaching weapons safety fundamentals, then progress to weapons qualification, providing Airmen instruction and feedback along the way. Before stepping onto the range, students learn how to safely load, unload and clear their weapons, maintain accountability and follow range procedures, establishing a foundation that prepares them for real-world scenarios.
During the M18 pistol course, Airmen apply the skills learned in the classroom on the firing line. As students progress through qualification drills, instructors evaluate their performance, identify areas for improvement and provide immediate feedback to help build consistency and proficiency.
“I want to make sure shooters are confident with the weapon system before they leave because that's what matters once they go downrange,” said the instructor. “Students need to be prepared to engage the threat and know how to fix a weapon system that goes down or they have a stoppage or a malfunction.”
While weapons qualification is an important part of the course, instructors say it extends beyond marksmanship. The course reinforces discipline, attention to detail and the ability to remain focused under pressure; qualities that can make a difference when Airmen are asked to perform in deployed environments.
The learning process looks different for every person. Some Airmen arrive with previous firearms experience, while others are handling a particular weapon system for the first time. CATM instructors tailor their instruction to each individual, helping Airmen overcome challenges and build confidence throughout the course.
“When it comes to deployed duties, take everything you learn in a combat arms class with you," said another CATM instructor assigned to the 1 SOW. “We won't be there when you deploy, so retaining those skills and lessons is critical.”
After completing live-fire training, Airmen clean and turn in their weapons, reinforcing the importance of maintenance and accountability. These final steps serve as a reminder that readiness is a continuous commitment to professionalism and responsibility.
As the Air Force continues to stay ready for future operations, CATM instructors remain an essential part of that effort, equipping Airmen with the skills, confidence and mindset needed to succeed in deployed environments and support the mission wherever they are called.
