The Hurlburt Field Fire Emergency Service is hosting National Fire Prevention Week here Oct. 6 through 12.

National Fire Prevention Week marks the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, which occurred Oct. 9, 1871. Identified as one of the worst fires in American history, it killed 250 people and destroyed 17,430 buildings, said Jarvis Amos, 1st Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron fire chief.

As a result of this tragedy, fire prevention codes were written requiring safer construction.
This year's theme for National Fire Prevention Week is "Prevent Kitchen Fires." Amos urges everyone to take part by inspecting their smoke detectors.

"Working smoke alarms cut the risk of getting injured or dying in a home fire in half," he said. "Worn or missing batteries are the most common cause of a smoke alarm detector malfunction. It's one of the simplest, most effective ways to prevent tragic deaths and injuries."

This is why smoke alarm batteries need to be changed at least twice a year.

"The next time your smoke detector starts chirping, replace the battery," Amos said. "The life you save may be your own."

Every household should also have a fire escape plan, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Fires can rage out of control and become deadly in seconds.

"Sitting down with your family for 20 minutes to talk about your fire escape plan can have a dramatic impact on your family safely exiting your home during a fire," FEMA's website stated. "As you discuss fire safety, remember the different needs you may have. For example: do you have pets? Are there people with disabilities in your home or business? What is the best route for evacuation?"

Planning now can save lives and Fire Prevention Week is one reason to start.

The following fire prevention and safety programs are scheduled throughout Hurlburt Field's National Fire Prevention Week:
  • Oct. 6: Sparky and Fire Engine will be at the Hurlburt Field Commissary and Base Exchange handing out treats 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
