1st SOSFS Airmen become DUI detectives

HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- Airmen from the 1st Special Operations Security Forces Squadron attended a driving under the influence training course here Sept. 5.

The annual training was designed to refresh the squadron's DUI detection skills.

"We have to be able to handle all aspects of our career field," said Staff Sgt. Stuart Jones, 1st SOSFS unit trainer. "This is a major crime and we have to be able to handle it."

The training placed intoxicated volunteers in a controlled environment with security forces personnel. Then, defenders administered several field sobriety tests to the volunteers.

One of tests was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, which was designed to measure the tracking ability of the eyes, and their ability to follow an object smoothly at different angles.

The training showed that those who are under the influence are unable to follow an object smoothly.

"I enjoyed the DUI training, I take it annually and I learn something new each time," said Senior Airman Zachery Gautier, 1st SOSFS patrolman. "This training keeps me refreshed with knowledge I need to do my job effectively."
