  • 24th SOW vice delivers keynote speech at Women Veterans Memorial unveiling

    Col. Allison Black, vice commander of the 24th Special Operations Wing, Air Force Special Operations Command, delivered the keynote speech at the unveiling ceremony of the Okaloosa County Women Veterans Memorial in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Nov. 11, 2021. The memorial, located at Veterans Park on Okaloosa Island, will now feature eight statues of women veterans throughout history.
  • MC-130H Combat Talon II return from deployment

    Two MC-130H Combat Talon II aircraft and their crews returned to Hurlburt Field, Oct. 6, 2021. Families patiently awaited the arrival of their loved ones as the aircraft flew in and landed. The aircraft most recently supported Operation ALLIES REFUGE and the final evacuation of Afghanistan.

  • 23rd SOWS: Hurricane prepared with a global impact

    The National Hurricane Center and the 23rd Special Operation Weather Squadron are currently monitoring Hurricane “X” located southwest of the area of responsibility. This system will slowly begin to curve north and northeast before it makes landfall over Alabama Wednesday morning. The expansive wind field will contribute to a prolonged period of tropical storm force winds extending across the western Florida panhandle. Impacts to Hurlburt Field are as follows… For weather Airmen, this is a common message crafted to alert and inform the 1st Special Operations Wing Commander and mission partners of potential threats to base resources and the population. “We are part of the planning process for missions but also deal with resource protection,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Mandy Wright, 23rd SOWS craftsman. “We tailor our reports to each aircraft and the potential threats that are inherent to various weather conditions.”
  • Designated Driver: Airman saves lives

    It was a normal Thursday night when Nick Cervantes drove to Okaloosa Island to pick up a friend he had met on temporary duty. She invited him out to a bar with her other friends. Initially Cervantes was skeptical about going out since he had work in the morning, but he eventually agreed to be their designated driver. All was going well as they drove down U.S. Highway 98 when suddenly Cervantes saw what looked like a flash of light in his rearview mirror. His car jerked forward. He attempted to slow down and realized his vehicle was speeding up. Quickly he decided to pull over to the right shoulder, but again his vehicle was not responding correctly. The vehicle began turning left and eventually began rolling over before being flung into oncoming traffic and hit by another car. He had been hit from behind causing a major accident. Instincts kicked in and Cervantes began searching for two of his passengers who had been ejected during the accident.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. William Spight, the NCO in charge of EO with the 1st SOW, received the Air Force EO of the Year award for his outstanding performance in 2019 within the EO community.
